Project: Los Mondragones sports center
Team: Joaquín Aramburu, José Luis Gómez de Tomás, Julio Domínguez Nevado
Date: 2011 – 2014
The site where Los Mondragones sports center will be located used to be an area dedicated to military facilities. Today, some of the remaining buildings from these military facilities house municipal offices from the Granada City Council. The current project seeks to continue with the urban regeneration that has been taking place in this metropolitan area, providing new uses and services for the neighborhood.
The goal of the project is to equip this urban area with a quality sports pavilion. The new building will dedicate more than 8.300m² to the required sport program, including indoor paddle tennis courts, a gym and swimming pools. The sports pavilion will also have an area of 2.500m² destined to commercial uses, and an underground parking lot. This new urban parking facility pursues to supply the neighborhood, as for today short on parking areas, with enough parking space for residents and eventual users.
Thus, “Los Mondragones” sports center provides an adequate response to its complex program, allowing every future use to function independently from each other at any time. With this in mind every area within the building has an independent and separate entrance both for pedestrian and for vehicles. Formally, the different uses are distributed into distinctive volumes that are joined by means of a common longitudinal floating volume that is both the access to the different entrances, creating a shaded roofed outdoor space, and the symbol of the continuing urban regeneration.
