Isla Cristina swimming pool
Project: Isla Cristina swimming pool
Location: Isla Cristina, Huelva
Team: Joaquín Aramburu Maqua y Julio Domínguez Nevado
Client: Ayuntamiento de Isla Cristina
The covered pool is a part of the large sports complex composed of the sports pavilion, the soccer field and the tracks. A linear body with a brick wall forms a massive blind façade covered by the great sheet metal roof supported by six reinforced concrete portalframes.
Divided into eight regulation lanes, the swimming pool measures 25 x 16.66 meters, with a maximum depth of 2.20 meters and minimum depth of 1.25 meters. The clearance height over the pool exceeds four meters. The enclosure gets sufficient natural lighting through the glazed curtain walls of its south and west façades. The total floor space, not including the spectators’ gallery, is 770 m2, of which 353.50 m2 are accounted for by the peripheral beach, whose minimum obstacle-free width is 2.60 meters. The solarium has 149 m2 of usable floor space. The pool is accessed from the changing rooms through two shower tunnels. The wood panel covering provides sufficient acoustic conditioning.
The covered pool is a part of the large sports block composed of the sports pavilion, the soccer field and the tracks. The strongest formal element of the composition is a linear brickwork body 64 meters long and 3.5 meters wide that forms a blind façade broken only by the entrance hall door. Resting on top of this longitudinal element is the large sheet metal roof supported by six reinforced concrete portal-frames. At each end, this wall is articulated with the rest of the sports facility enclosure by means of access openings equipped with metal gates. The southern façade, which is glazed in the pool area and closed in the changing room area, is the back enclosure facing the tennis courts.
