Energy Certification of Buildings

Directive 2002/91/EC of the European Parliament of 16 December 2002 on the energy performance of buildings establishes the obligation to make available to purchasers or users of buildings an energy performance certificate which must include objective information on the energy characteristics of buildings.

Subsequently, Royal Decree 47/2007 made it mandatory to prepare the energy efficiency certificate for new buildings and include it as a document in the Building Book.

Today, the Energy Efficiency Certificate is being applied to existing buildings and is now required in purchase or lease agreements, total or partial, signed from July 2013 onwards, and the owner is responsible for commissioning it, as stated in Royal Decree 235/2013, of April 5.

This certificate includes recommended measures, classified according to their technical, functional, and economic feasibility, as well as their energy impact, to improve the building's energy efficiency rating through energy-efficient renovations.
