PROJECT: October 12th Facilities Building

This building was created to centralize all the central facilities of the 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid, connecting with the buildings of the complex through underground galleries.

Basically, the building consists of two rectangular sections joined by a third triangular section. The first two sections, each with two floors, house the central facilities of the hospital complex, while the third, with four floors, contains the lobby, the vertical circulation core, and the administrative offices.

The facades combine prefabricated white concrete panels and aluminum sheeting, with the horizontal component always predominating.

The triangular body extends its sharpest vertex into a cantilever on the top floor and is configured as a glass prism embedded between the concrete panels.

Between the three sections of the building, a central courtyard is created that extends down to the basement level, providing vehicular access to the new service galleries that connect this building to the existing ones. In the courtyard, the building takes on its more industrial appearance, displaying chimneys, downpipes, metal walkways, and ventilation grilles.

The interiors of the power plants reflect their industrial nature, with all the metal or concrete structural elements and the perfectly organized pipe networks exposed. They are open-plan areas flooded with natural light from the windows that run along all the facades and from the skylights in the roof.
