October 12 Polyclinic

PROJECT: New Polyclinic Building of the 12 de Octubre Hospital in Madrid

The site for the new polyclinic building at the 12 de Octubre Hospital is surrounded by the facilities of this healthcare complex. The impressive 63,000-square-meter building, along with an additional 25,000 square meters of underground parking, will house 280 specialist consultation rooms, examination rooms, laboratories, and research areas.

To avoid projecting a monolithic and monotonous image, the new Polyclinic complex is divided into three basic volumes. First, the base, clad in limestone and comprising the ground and first floors, which house the entrances and the building's most public areas. Second, the central section, made up of the floors rising from the second to the sixth. This substantial volume is clad in white concrete panels and is further divided into two zones, each with a double-skin curtain wall and an elevator tower. Two climate control towers with horizontal galvanized steel louvers run its entire length. Finally, the "tower," located in the building's fifth wing, is taller and features a distinct facade treatment.

The new polyclinic comprises three basement levels (parking, galleries, and utility rooms), a semi-basement level for parking and non-clinical hospital uses, and nine above-ground floors (ground floor plus eight), with the clinical areas and climate control systems located on the top two floors. It consists of five wings connected by two longitudinal modules, two parallel buildings: one houses public access and circulation, while the other primarily contains internal circulation and the administrative offices.
