Príncipe de Vergara 109 Office Building

PROJECT: Adaptation of the Thermal Envelope of the Office Building at Príncipe de Vergara 109, Madrid

The original building consists of a prismatic volume, with eleven floors, which was built in 1965.

The ground floor and mezzanine share the same exterior treatment, forming a base clad in black granite. Above these floors rise the typical upper floors, which cantilever outwards with continuous facade openings that emphasize the horizontality of the different floor levels. The cladding of the solid sections consists of prefabricated, washed pebble tiles in the window sills corresponding to the office area.

The rear facade of the building, where the vertical communication cores and toilets are located, is covered in a smooth single-layer coating and is made up of small openings with marble jambs that protrude from the facade plane.

The aim of this project is to renew the building's appearance. To achieve this, we propose adding a second skin composed of aluminum composite panels. The proposed design seeks to enhance the horizontality established by the tall, narrow windows. Additionally, the canopy at the building's entrance will be clad, framing the access point.
Any intervention on the facades presents an opportunity to improve the building's thermal envelope and, consequently, its energy efficiency. The building has been insulated with a 5cm layer of mineral wool, with a thermal conductivity of h= 0.035W/mK. This investment in insulation, assuming the same usage patterns and existing lighting and climate control systems, represents an energy saving of €2,225 per year and a total reduction of 11,392 kg of CO2 per year.

Final energy rating: B – 117.6 kWh/yearm² – 76.4 kgCO2/yearm²
