Proton Therapy at Fuenlabrada University Hospital

AUTHOR: Árgola Arquitectos / Otxotorena architects / PROMEC

SURFACE AREA: 2,200 m2

STATUS: PROJECT DRAWN UP AND CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORANDUM

Precision infrastructure for the new oncology

The project proposes the incorporation of a Proton Therapy Unit as a strategic piece within the hospital ecosystem, capable of integrating highly complex technology into a consolidated healthcare environment.

Far from being an isolated expansion, the proposal is conceived as a natural extension of the existing oncology system, reinforcing its capacity and redefining its scope. The architecture here acts as an interface between cutting-edge technology and the patient experience.

An architecture from the technological core

The building is organized around a central element: the proton therapy bunker, a highly technical infrastructure that conditions both the construction logic and the spatial layout.

This dense, precise, and controlled core is surrounded by a series of functional layers that grade the relationship between technology and use:
from clinical and diagnostic spaces to preparation areas and specialized work environments.

The proposal transforms an extreme technical condition into a clear and legible architectural order.

Integration and continuity

The new unit is attached to the existing oncology pavilion, establishing direct connections that allow for resource sharing, optimized routes, and the consolidation of a continuous care system.

The building functions autonomously from a construction point of view, but is fully integrated in functional terms, guaranteeing a smooth transition between the existing and the new.

Technology, functional precision and spatial clarity

The organization follows a logic of maximum efficiency, where every route and every space is defined by its function. The result is an architecture where operational complexity translates into clarity of use and spatial legibility.

The materiality and the construction system respond to the demands of a unique facility: massive structures, technical envelopes and highly controlled spaces coexist with care areas designed from criteria of comfort and humanization.

Architecture for clinical innovation

The project positions itself as a highly specialized architecture, where technique, program and space align to respond to one of the most demanding areas of contemporary healthcare architecture.
