PROJECT: Renovation and Expansion of the Oncology Hospital of the Dominican Republic

A client with extensive experience in oncology services has entrusted us with the redesign of their Oncology Clinic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with the goal of becoming a benchmark in design and technology, providing the best possible care to patients who require their services. The project encompasses several key areas to improve patients' quality of life and optimize the delivery of medical services.

The distribution of the program by levels is defined according to criteria of public flow, patient stay and program type, that is, programs with high public flow or demanded by patients with reduced mobility are located on levels with direct access from the public road, as well as all general services that require access to the loading dock, while those programs with medium public flow are on levels immediately below or above and in general long stay programs are distributed on upper floors.

The operating rooms were located on the top floor to accommodate their facilities in a position directly above. The basement houses the radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging services, as well as the parking garage beneath the Plaza building.

The expansion is carried out respecting the expansion joints of the structure, connecting with the existing building through a series of walkways, thus minimizing the impact on the existing building during the work, in order to maintain the care service for as long as possible until the renovation of the existing Oncoserv building is undertaken.

In the Plaza building, two new vertical cores are being installed to allow and ensure the segregation of circulation routes. This provides a large elevator for inpatients and hospital staff, and a separate public elevator. The existing vertical core is being retained in the current Oncoserv building. Two new staircases are being added to ensure compliance with evacuation routes.
