PROJECT: Salvador Hospital and National Institute of Geriatrics

The Hospital del Salvador is a public hospital located in the Providencia district of Santiago, Chile. It is part of the healthcare network of the Metropolitan East Health Service.

It was founded on December 7, 1871 as a result of the concern of the government of Federico Errázuriz Zañartu about the high mortality caused by various epidemics that affected the city of Santiago.

In 1888, Santiago had 22 professional doctors, 967 hospital beds, 14 dispensaries, 1 hospice, 2 orphanages, and 25 lazarettos, for a population of 18,648 sick people.

The land is located in the Providencia district in a central and consolidated area of ​​the city.

The site for the new building is trapezoidal in shape and is located north of the existing hospital complex. The land is bordered to the north by Dr. Hernán Alessandri Street, to the east by José Manuel Infante Street, to the west by Salvador Avenue, and to the south by the Salvador Hospital, a historical monument and National Heritage site.

The terrain slopes gently down 4 meters from its highest point in the northeast, diagonally to its lowest point in the southwest. As a key constraint, urban planning regulations limit the height of the new hospital to 17.5 meters. The available footprint for the new building is 21,500 square meters at ground level.

The preliminary design for the Salvador Hospital and National Institute of Geriatrics is divided into 3 main functional areas:

• Salvador Hospital: With the areas of Hospitalization, ICU, Wards and Emergency

• Outpatient Care: Where you will find Consultations, Procedures, Physical Medicine, Imaging and the Mental Health Unit

• National Institute of Geriatrics: With its own Hospitalization, Consultation and Physical Medicine area

It is estimated that once operational, this Hospital Complex will perform the following:

• 370,000 queries

• 31,000 hospitalizations

• 19,000 major surgeries

• 5,000 minor surgeries

The work developed and written by árgola arquitectos/ Euroestudios, carries out an exhaustive review of the original in various aspects.

Urban planning, programmatic, functional and constructive aspects, all based on a series of prior conditions and objectives that have been taken into consideration when addressing a hospital complex of this nature, respecting the original main objectives of the previous Project, namely:

– To seek an architecture that acts as a therapeutic element

– To build an environmentally friendly building

– To design a building that considers and integrates the existing structures

– To reduce the hospital's vulnerability to disasters

– To achieve the greatest possible logistical efficiency
