DESCRIPTIVE MEMORANDUM
The Functional Plan and the Preliminary Architectural Study for the Severo Ochoa University Hospital proposes a comprehensive transformation of the hospital complex, aimed at adapting the existing infrastructure to current and future healthcare requirements, while guaranteeing operational continuity throughout the construction process.
The proposal stems from a clear diagnosis: the partial obsolescence of the facilities, functional fragmentation, and inefficient workflows limit the hospital's capacity to respond to growing demand. Faced with this situation, a strategy is defined based on selective expansion, functional reorganization , and phased implementation.
At an organizational level, the intervention redefines the hospital by simplifying circulation routes and segregating patient flows, clearly differentiating between public and staff circuits, and concentrating outpatient activity in specific areas. This restructuring improves operational efficiency, reduces interference, and optimizes the patient experience.
From an architectural point of view, the proposal relies on the structural and modular capacity of the existing building, maintaining its cross-shaped growth logic and taking advantage of its high versatility to integrate new facilities without altering its main structure.
The result is a strategic intervention that not only expands the hospital's capacity, but also redefines its functional model, aligning it with contemporary standards of efficiency, flexibility and quality of care.
