Tajo Hospital

PROJECT: Tajo Hospital, Aranjuez

On an irregular plot of land located north of Aranjuez, next to the old N-IV highway, stands the new Hospital del Tajo. This horizontally oriented complex of buildings (lower semi-basement and a maximum of two stories) comprises several modules organized into four volumes arranged orthogonally. When Hospital del Tajo reaches its full capacity (2017), it will have a total of 126 beds and 30 day hospital beds.

The transparencies generated by the set of courtyards, thirteen in total, the sequence established between the exterior lobby, protected by a canopy, the generous interior lobby and the central courtyard, as well as the chromatic range of the materials used are some of the bets of the project now made a reality.

The site slopes upwards towards the east. A horizontally developed complex is situated on this terrain. The outpatient building, located to the south of the complex, consists of a two-story block adjacent to the main entrance, to which it is connected via a longitudinal gallery. This gallery, starting from the lobby, contains the vertical circulation cores for the public. Six interior courtyards allow for efficient sunlight while also separating the different sections of the building. The semi-basement houses the public parking garage with a capacity of 262 spaces. Parallel to this block, and separated by a large courtyard that extends the main lobby, is a second building. In this second building, courtyards divide three wings that are joined at both ends by the hospital's circulation corridors.

The technical and general services block constitutes a third building, located to the west of the hospital. Finally, separated by a ramped street, is the industrial building that houses the building services.
