PROJECT: Hospital in Malabo

In addition to prioritizing functional and environmental constraints, the project is, for us, an important typological investigation. We therefore propose a typologically unprejudiced project that is an exercise in synthesizing the major functional aspects onto an object that is conceived as a meta-project, a “Project of Projects.” That is to say, a container so refined in its immovable aspects that define the space and its use.

The project proposes a radical spatial typology in the categorization of external space, internal space, and connecting spaces. Interior streets that distribute external circulation, leading to large courtyards, are sufficient to structure the building's organization. It is therefore a single-story building above ground level, arranged in a double comb pattern and opening via wings to the south, north, east, and west, with open courtyards.

This proposal is justified, typologically, by its capacity for spatial-functional synthesis, by its implicit flexibility, by its intelligibility (easy orientation in its use), by its compactness and by the spatial program it entails as a response to a disturbing environment.
