Renovation of the South Pavilion of the García Orcoyen Hospital in Estella
PROJECT: Project for the Renovation of the South Pavilion of the García García Orcoyen Hospital in Estella to adapt it to a Mental Health Center.
The proposed design addresses the program of needs, including all the spaces outlined therein. The design prioritizes functionality and the optimization of resources over other considerations. Special care has been taken to avoid altering existing facade openings, and all interior partitions have been designed to fit within them.
General circulation
All floors of the proposal are structured with a central corridor that serves the different rooms and allows minimizing circulation areas and optimizing the routes of facilities.
To comply with the CTE DB-SI (Spanish Building Code - Fire Safety), all floors of the building must have two alternative evacuation exits, ensuring that no dead ends exceed 20 meters in length. This requirement is not met on the two upper floors; therefore, an evacuation staircase is included, extending to the ground floor, at the junction of the inpatient areas and the east wing. Similarly, the basement circulation corridor is designed to run from the elevator core to the exit located at the northeast end.

The floor is structured in two distinct parts. To the west and next to the vertical core are the work and storage rooms, while in the eastern half are the changing rooms with the possibility of using the emergency exit as a staff access from the outside.
Ground floor. (Mental health center)
This floor presents the greatest functional complexity in order to address two fundamental issues:
-The differentiation between public and staff circulation (and access).
-The separation between adult and child patient areas.
The proposed solution addresses these issues through a scheme in which the adult area is located at the western end of the pavilion, the children's area at the eastern end, and between them are the common work areas and the access lobby.
A central corridor is proposed, starting from the existing vertical core and passing through the interior areas. To the south of this corridor is the public entrance, which is accessed via a central lobby leading to the adult (to the west) and children's (to the east) waiting areas. From these waiting areas, there is direct access to the distribution corridors for both consultation areas.
The corridor through the common areas is separated from the consultation areas by access-controlled doors, preventing patient access. The evacuation staircase from the upper floors connects to this area and also links the workspaces on the first floor with those on the ground floor.
First floor
The floor is structured in two zones. The one closest to the hospitalization area contains the work spaces, and at the back, with a greater degree of independence, are the bedrooms of on-call doctors in the extension space of the building.
Roof Plan:
A green roof is proposed to serve as an outdoor expansion space for the two adjacent hospital wards. To enhance the connection between the hospital wards and the roof, the roof is located next to the new staircase, and the building's utility room is moved to the east end of the building.
