PROJECT: Territorial Planning Plan for the Huelva Urban Area

The Huelva metropolitan area, covering 968 km², forms a transitional space between the southern foothills of the Andévalo region and the Atlantic coast, and is a significant part of the western Andalusian coastline. Its proximity to Cádiz, Seville, and the Portuguese Algarve connects the area to important centers of economic activity and population.

This region finds itself at the end of the first decade of the 21st century in an opportune moment to consider a territorial planning project. The significant growth in infrastructure capacity and income that has occurred in the last quarter of a century has not been accompanied by a degree of urban sprawl comparable to that of other Andalusian urban areas. A socioeconomic reality in which tourism plays a smaller role than in other coastal areas has contributed to this overall process, although significant differences exist at the municipal level.
