Since its inauguration in 1973, the 12 de Octubre Hospital has been at the forefront and has undergone numerous transformations to become a benchmark in medical care and innovation. With a total built area of 148,262 m2 and 1,368 beds, the hospital is a giant that has evolved with the needs of a constantly changing society.
Phases I and II of the Master Plan, completed between 2003 and 2010, laid the groundwork for modernization. Now, Phase III, with the new Technical Block and Hospitalization Unit, promises to be an architectural and functional landmark.
The New Block: Beyond the Walls
This new block, designed with a holistic vision, is composed of distinct volumes. The lower floors house the Technical Block, while the inpatient wards rise above it. Between the two, a Technical Floor houses the building services, demonstrating optimized facility design.
This project, in its fourth phase, involves the relocation from the General Residence tower. The maximum capacity of 1,450 inpatient beds, 41 operating rooms, 10 interventional suites, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, and other areas will enable professionals to propel the hospital to the forefront of medical care through this state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Challenges and Objectives: A Commitment to Excellence
The project is a challenge in itself. With an impossible deadline and the need to maintain hospital operations, Phase I has been a test of balance and efficiency. The simultaneous implementation of high-tech equipment in 16 INVEAT rooms adds another layer of complexity.
The primary objective is to organize and consolidate all the dispersed services into a central building, linking the various buildings within the complex. This will result in a larger area, updated equipment, and improved logistical efficiency. The new building will serve as the hub connecting facilities, the Outpatient Activities Center, the Emergency Department, and more.
Design: Between Functionality and Aesthetics
The project combines the base that houses the diagnosis and treatments, flowing from the public to internal uses and the hospitalization wings, whose geometry opens up views of the landscape and improves sunlight.
The circulation routes, access points, and layout of the floors have been meticulously planned. From the entrances to the intensive care (ICUs), every element contributes to an efficient and comfortable hospital experience.

In the inpatient and ICU wards, two nursing stations optimize care, connecting independently to work areas, rest areas, and the pharmacy.
